SEPTEMBER 19 - OCTOBER 31, 2020

BEST PRACTICE is excited to announce our participation in the 2020 edition of Other Places art fair (OPaf), which was moved to a web-based platform, with a new project conceived and built especially for OPaf titled Ethylene Spring by San Diego-based artist and designer Matthew Hebert.

Other Places art fair will take place September 19 - October 31, 2020, and can be viewed at OPaf.info

The installation Ethylene Spring embodies climate change anxiety through an interactive installation riffing on the tripod seat of the Oracle of Delphi housed within the Temple of Apollo. From atop this iconic seat, which straddled a fissure in the earth, the fume enshrouded Pythia would deliver her prophecies to desperate visitors. In Ethylene Spring, Hebert asks visitors to take turns ascending the tripod to bathe in the custom scented fog from a machine at its base. While there, they can freely rotate their seat to view the surrounding landscape, all the while hearing a selection of dark prophecies beamed straight to their perch. These weather-related snippets will come from various sources including poetry, cinema, news coverage, and pop music. Contrasted with these somewhat inscrutable excerpts, the other elements of the experience will be rather visceral. Between ascending the ladder, inhaling the scented vapors, and hearing the words emerge from all the ambient noise of the surroundings, the visitor should find themselves truly discombobulated.

ABOUT OPaf

We are pleased to announce the third annual OPaf (Other Places art fair), launching online September 19 and continuing through October 31, 2020 at OPaf.info

OPaf 2020 features over forty art project spaces from the United States and Mexico in a durational gathering and public forum taking place across multiple digital media platforms, apps, and in safe physical locations.

In keeping with OPaf’s mission and ethos of operating outside of the traditional Art Fair system, this year's online iteration of OPaf presents an alternative to the current online viewing room-focused structure of experiencing art.

A calendar of OPaf related events will be posted at OPaf.info before the launch date.

OPaf 2020 also includes online iterations of OPaBf (Other Places art Book fair) curated by The Fulcrum Press and OPPPAFFF (Other Places Projects Performances and Fun Food Fair) organized by Asha Bukojemsky, and concludes with the awarding of the first annual OPaf Prize, a cash prize for best booth (selected randomly).

BEST PRACTICE is a not-for-profit exhibition space located in the Barrio Logan neighborhood of San Diego, CA for projects from regional, national, and international artists and curators.

For its first two years, BEST PRACTICE existed at two locations in San Diego: within an institutional glass-enclosed bulletin board housed within the Department of Art, Architecture + Art History at the University of San Diego, and on a Sony Trinitron PVM20L5 video monitor which screened video works installed at Helmuth Projects.

BEST PRACTICE was founded by Joe Yorty and Allie Mundt in 2016.
