Homage to the Square II, 2025

This work was created for Project Blank’s Working Title No. 4. This exhibition and performance series focuses on experimental work by both visual and performing artists. It took place in the St Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral in San Diego. This piece picks up on my previous work, Homage to the Loop. That piece pulled colors from a bouquet of fake flowers rotating on a turntable below a suspended color sensor. It was very much a mediation on life during COVID lockdown; looping solitude. Homage II takes the same concept and uses it to very different ends. Now we have an interactive sculpture that requires four participants simultaneously contribute colors to different bands on the Albers motif. The only way to fully activate the work is to work with others. The work also riffs on ideas of reverence in the arts. The tongue in cheek letter on the base points at our culture’s tendency to place otherworld significance on the work of canonized geniuses. But, my sincere hope is that people come together and literally contribute part of themselves to the whole of the work.
